Overview
Our involvement in the Forrestfield Airport Link was centered on the Design, Supply, and Installation of Fire Protection to the SGI Lining. In compliance with the warranty required by PTA, we innovatively utilised Stainless Steel mesh baskets and stainless steel ties, employing Rio guns for installation. Our focus extended beyond mere solutions to the intricate details that elevate a system to excellence.
Background
Unique Fire Protection at Forrestfield Airport Link.
In 2018, a leak during the installation of the first tunnel cross passage, Cross Passage Dundas, led to rapid water and silt ingress into Tunnel One, causing ground loss and a sinkhole formation. The resulting groundwater pressure and lack of support caused permanent distortion and damage to a 26-meter section of Tunnel One. To address this, a cast iron steel ring (SGI lining) was installed and, recognizing the critical nature of the project, passive fire protection was deemed necessary for the SGI lining.
The SGI lining played a pivotal role in ensuring tunnel integrity, and to enhance its fire protection capabilities, Cafco Fendolite was meticulously installed. PFM collaborated closely with Salini in designing stainless steel mesh baskets, perfectly contouring the surface of the SGI lining. This approach aimed at achieving not just functionality but a seamless integration of safety measures.
